Luís Ribeiro is a Group Leader at the Multidisciplinary Institute of Ageing (MIA-Portugal), where he investigates how alterations in neuronal cell-surface receptors, particularly cell-adhesion molecules, contribute to synaptic dysfunction and cognitive decline during aging and in age-associated neurological disorders..

Luís obtained his Ph.D. at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC-UC), University of Coimbra, where he studied the role of ghrelin signalling in hippocampal function. He then joined the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Brain & Disease Research (Belgium) for his postdoctoral training, where he developed expertise in imaging, biochemical, and proteomic approaches to uncover molecular mechanisms controlling synaptic organization and neuronal surface protein composition. His work has been published in leading journals, including PNAS, Science Signaling, Neuron, and PLoS Biology.

Following his postdoctoral training, he secured competitive funding from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and the European Commission through a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship, enabling him to establish his independent research programme at CNC-UC before moving to MIA-Portugal in 2024. More recently, he received funding from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and became a partner in a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network to further investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying cognitive decline during aging and in age-associated neurological disorders.
