The group “Neuroprotection and Neurogenesis in Brain Repair”, at the CNC-Coimbra, in collaboration with “Unitè de la Physiologie Cellulaire, Universitè de Marseille (Prof. Christophe Mulle) reported the identification of a presynaptic kainate receptor (containing GluR7 subunits) involved in presynaptic forms of synaptic plasticity in the mossy fibers of the hippocampus. This work strongly contributed to solve a scientic problem, with more than 20 years, with important implications to the pathophysiology of the hippocampal networks.
Pinheiro, P., Perrais, D., Coussen, F., Barhanin, J., Bettler, B., Mann, J.R., Malva, J.O., Heinemann, S.F. and Mulle, C. (2007) GluR7 is an essential subunit of presynaptic kainate autoreceptors at hippocampal mossy fiber synapses. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA . 104: 12181-12186. 104: 12181-12186.
